Uploading Files
Data Stewardship
Users are reminded to abide by the Platform Terms of Use and any Project-specific restrictions when using the Portal to access data.
All files uploaded to the platform land in the Green Room. In this isolated storage area, access is restricted to members with a role that explicitly grants permission to the parent folder(s) where the items are stored, and to Project Administrators who can view all files in the Green Room. After verification that data are compliant with the Project’s data management plan, they can be being copied to the Core where Project members with permissioned roles can access the data, launch workspace analyses, and prepare Datasets.
Prerequisites
Membership in the Project in a role that includes View and Upload permission levels in at least one top-level Green Room folder (Shared folder or User folder), or Project Administrator role (can upload into any destination).
Stable internet connection.
Instructions
Upload permission is role-based. Items can be uploaded into any folder provided that your designated Project user role includes the View and Upload permission levels on the parent folder(s). Project user roles are managed by Project Administrators.
Navigate your Project’s File Explorer, click Green Room, and select an accessible destination folder.
To upload the file to a sub-folder, click an existing sub-folder to open it or click + New Folder to create a folder then click to open it.
Click Upload.
Check the Project field and destination folder name to confirm you’re in the correct Project and destination.
Tip: If you don’t see the Upload button, your role doesn’t include Upload permission in the parent folder. Check with a Project Administrator if you believe your role should be changed.
Click Select, choose Select Files or Select Folder, then choose files or folders from your local computer.
Review the file list. To remove a selected file, hover on the file name and click the Trash icon.
Add desired optional elements:
Tags: Enter one or more Tags (keywords) to attach to all the files in this upload. Note: adding tags during upload is not available for folders. To add Tags to a folder, upload the folder first, then use one of the alternate methods described in Adding and Modifying File Tags.
Attributes: If Attributes have been configured by the Project Administrator, a dropdown menu will become visible and you’ll be prompted to annotate the file with metadata attributes. See Adding and Modifying File Attributes for more information.
Click Upload to initiate the the file upload, or Cancel to exit without uploading.
The progress of file upload can be checked by clicking the the File Status icon from the Main Menu. See Checking File Status for more information.
Considerations
Large files and folders: The Portal supports upload of files or folders up to approximately 10 GB at a time, and large folders with up to 10,000 files inside. Upload performance may be impacted by your internet connection. If your upload session exceeds this size, it is recommended to use the Command Line Interface (see Working with Project Files in the Command Line Interface) or contact Support for more information on setting up a custom data integration.
Compressed files: The portal supports upload of individual files or entire folders, including compressed folders (e.g., .zip, .tar, .rar archives). Compressed files can be previewed using the File Preview tool (see Previewing Files in this article), and extracted or decompressed using one of the Workspace tools.
Uploading duplicate files and folders: Duplicate files cannot be uploaded to the same destination folder. The Portal will detect files with the same name, case insensitive, and handle duplicates in one of two ways:
If you attempt to upload a file with a name that already exists in the upload destination, an error message is returned. Instead, you can either upload the file with a different filename, or create a new Green Room folder and upload the file to the new folder.
If you attempt to upload a folder with a name that already exists in the upload destination, the Portal uploader will scan the inner folder contents for duplicate files. If existing files of the same name are detected in the destination, a warning message will display the duplicates, as described in Figure 1. You have the option to either:
cancel the upload and choose a different destination, or
continue the upload and skip the duplicate files; only the upload the unique files will be uploaded.
