Sites, Projects and Folders in LabKey

Basics

  • The project and folder hierarchy is like a directory tree and forms the basic organizing structure inside Brain-CODE’s LabKey. Projects are the top-level folders, they have the same behaviours as other folders as well as some additional configuration options. Projects typically represent a separate team or research effort.

  • A single installation of the software LabKey is known as a site.

  • Within a LabKey site, there may be several projects that correspond to a team or area of work and act as a directory of the associated folders and subfolders.

  • Folders within LabKey represent individual pages or data containers that may be further sub-divided into subfolders.

Additional Notes

  • Folders and projects are synonymous with respect to LabKey.

  • Access has to be granted to the top-level folder in order to access subsequent sub-folders.

  • Most Integrated Discovery Programs (IDPs) on Brain-CODE are set up to have a Project level folder for the entire IDP. This acts as a website homepage.

  • From here most IDPs will have a way to navigate to folders for Studies, Data Releases, File Sharing or Transfers and other Custom folders.

  • Studies will typically contain folders and subfolders for which study data is organized based on the study title.

  • Data Releases may have subfolders containing file repositories to share data that is ready for Zone 1 or 2 release.

  • File transfers and sharing will normally contain an internal folder and external folder for sharing among research teams or collaborators. Speak with your Program or Study Manager to learn more about your study or project team’s folder hierarchy on LabKey.

  • Within your IDP’s project home page you will be able to navigate to other folders or studies either through the breadcrumb menu (1) or via folder icon buttons (2).

  • Top-level projects will be listed in bold and folders can be found by clicking the + icon

  • Additional sub-folders may be embedded below other folders in a hierarchy which can be accessed via the + icon as well

  • Within folders, you may navigate to subsequent sub-folders utilizing the “Project Navigation” web part and clicking the icon for the sub-folder you wish to navigate to.
