Two Factor Authentication (2FA) on REDCap

Two-factor authentication (sometimes referred to as two-step login) is implemented on Brain-CODE’s REDCap. Logging in to REDCap will soon require an additional step to verify your identity when accessing certain projects or personal settings.

There are currently two options implemented for authentication on REDCap:

  • Email verification - receive a code through email and enter into REDCap within 2 minutes.

  • Google Authenticator - obtain a code through the Google Authenticator app on your mobile phone.

 

After entering your login credentials (username and password), you will see the following on your screen:

 

Follow the steps below to set up and use two-factor authentication for accessing REDCap.

Email Authentication

There is no advance setup required to authenticate by email. Follow the steps below to log into REDCap using email verification.

  1. Log into REDCap and select the option for: Email: Send an email containing your verification code to your email account.

  2. You will receive a verification code via email. The message will be titled "REDCap 2-step login" and will come to the primary email address listed in your REDCap account.

  3. Enter the code contained in the email into the Enter your verification code window.

  4. Click Submit to log into REDCap.

Note: Codes sent via email will expire in 2 minutes. You must enter the code into REDCap before it expires. Each code can only be used one time.

Google Authentication

Before using Google Authentication, follow the steps to setup Google Authentication below.

  1. Log into REDCap and select the option for: Google Authenticator: Open the Google Authenticator app on your mobile device to get the verification code associated with your REDCap user account.

  2. Open the Google Authenticator app on your mobile device and obtain the 6 digit code for your REDCap account.

  3. Enter the code contained in the app into the Enter your verification code window.

  4. Click Submit to log into REDCap.

Setting up Google Authentication

  1. Log into REDCap and navigate to My Profile.

  2. On the Edit Your User Profile page, click Set-up Google Authenticator for two-step login under the Login-related options heading.

3. Download the Google Authenticator app and, when prompted, scan the QR code presented in the Set up Google Authenticator for two-step login window.
